WEST Somerset Community College student Abi Smith is having a taste of sweet success after winning a districtwide cookery competition.

Abi, 16, had already won the Rotary Club of Minehead Young Chef Competition and was competing in the district round.

She was up against 13 other young competitors who all had just two hours to cook up a three course meal with a maximum budget of £15.

Abi's menu of mini salmon Wellingtons, poached chicken breast stuffed with ricotta cheese and lime mousse was enough to tickle the judges' tastebuds and secure her the title of the best young chef in the district.

She will now go on to the regional round of the competition.

Joe Roake of Minehead Rotary Club was full of praise for Abi's culinary skills.

"She worked calmly and with focus to achieve an outstanding result.

"I am really impressed with the work done at the West Somerset Community College and the coaching of Adrian Fleming .

"It's something that Minehead should be truly proud of."

Mr Fleming, the college's subject leader for hospitality said Abi should feel proud of her achievements, which were a reflection of her commitment and hard work.

"I am very proud of her. She is a credit to the college and her community." Mr Fleming said.
