A STORM which swept across West Somerset on Tuesday night (April 15) brought down a tree and forced the closure of the A358 road from Williton to Taunton.

Police closed the road on Wednesday between Combe Florey and Eastcombe before the busy morning commuter run at about 7.30 am while county highways contractors were called.

The tree fell close to Tribble Bridge, which carries the West Somerset Railway line over the road.

It was the scene in 2022 of two mudslides within weeks of each other which saw hundreds of tonnes of soil and potatoes swept from fields onto the carriageway, resulting in the road being closed and a massive clean-up operation.

The road regularly floods along the Combe Florey stretch in times of heavy rainfall but the worst of Tuesday’s storm missed the area, with North Devon taking the brunt of it.

There was no indication how long it would take to reopen the A358.
