A NEW £2.4 million sports and leisure centre which will transform the village of Stogursey could take a step nearer reality next week when West Somerset Council’s cabinet is expected to agree a £400,000 grant.

Once approved, a 40-year-old wooden building housing the village youth club will be demolished to make way for a new extension to the existing Victory Village Hall, which will be the hub of a complex of sport and leisure facilities expected to attract users from a wide area.

“Nowhere else around here will be able to offer anything like it,” said Quantock Vale councillor Chris Morgan, who has been championing the development for six years.

“We are hoping local sports clubs and social groups will take advantage of all the new facilities and make the project a real asset to the area.”

The £400,000 grant will come from £500,000 of leisure funds ring-fenced for Stogursey from Hinkley Point C builders EDF Energy.

Cllr Morgan said he was confident that other funding sources would provide the remaining £2 million needed to complete the project.
