REVERSING the trend of recent years, last Saturday's Stogumber Show saw an increased number of entries. The judges commented on the general high standard despite the variable weather and the early growing season. Cucumbers and raspberries shone as the best vegetable and fruit exhibits while gladioli held the honours for flowers and shortbread was the best exhibit produced in a kitchen. There was the usual lively interest when the show opened in the afternoon with competitors, families and friends enjoying a village tradition that has been held annually now for almost 60 years. One disappointment was the limited lack of interest among the older children. Thanks to the efforts of the school, though, the younger ones more than compensated. In fact, there was a four-way tie for the Ryder Cup for under eights - it was shared by Chloe Scimgeour, Callum Illman, Abbie Logan and Rachel Opie. Clare Thomas who until last month provided that focal point of village life, the village shop, presented the prizes. Pictured are judge Margaret Sharpley, left, and steward Sandy Hull.
