SIR — In the run up to Christmas I asked often in town - "May I?", "Would you mind?", "Please could I have ..?" - and in almost every instance Minehead shopkeepers and our superstores staff had the answer "Of course you can!"

What a wonderful phrase!

One was very aware they were all working their socks off to keep their shops and shelves filled for us all in the run-up to Christmas and still had the courtesy and smiles to say "Of course you can!" and spur one on to cope!
