SIR — My wife and I have just returned from a very enjoyable Exmoor holiday. The scenery was fantastic.

We visited many places, but I pick out Dunster, Lynton and Lynmouth, Tarr Steps and Dulverton with the River Barle running through the town, surrounded yb high banked woodland, and not forgetting the town’s wonderful heritage centre.

We have one query regarding a sign near Tarr Steps car park which gives the impression that cars are not allowed beyond that point.

Whilst we were there, two cars drove across the river ford. Surely the sign should say “Unbridged ford ahead”.

One local told us he drove from his Hawkridge home across the ford to reach the B3223 on a regular basis.

All the Exmoor folk we met were very friendly except for one person.

We were exploring a remote lane in the Dulverton area when a lady in a large car pulled up alongside us. We wound down our car window expecting a friendly response.

Instead, in a very abrupt way, she told us that we were using a private road which was for their farm only.

Soon after, I learned that this was very much a public road, so why this silly episode?

In spite of this, we will return as we enjoyed Exmoor so much.

Mr and Mrs Booth,

Seagull Close,

Crewe.
