A busy Yeovil road could have its speed limit lowered from 40mph to 30mph.

The proposed reduction to reduce speed on Queensway is the idea of town councillors, who last week decided to formally approach highway bosses and ask for the reduction.

What actually prompted the idea was a request for 30mph markings to be painted on Lysander Road between the police station and the traffic lights.

Town councillor Roy Margetts said that Lysander Road is 30mph, which people coming from the 40mph Queensway don't realise.

Mr Margetts said he could see no reason why the 30mph markings couldn't be painted on Lysander Road, demanding action from Somerset County Council, which is the authority dealing with highways. County councillor Cathy Bakewell was present at the meeting and said 30mph markings wouldn't necessarily make people go any slower.

"We need to be certain it would make a difference. I am not convinced," she added.

As a result, the idea to make Queensway 30mph materialised.

Town councillors voted 4-2 to officially propose the change be made.
