FIREFIGHERS from Williton have helped to rescue a sheep trapped in brambles on a slope above a quarry near Bicknoller.

They were helped by a Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service specialist animal rescue team from Barnstaple.

The sheep was reported trapped in a dense belt of brambles on steeply sloping land at about mid-day on Sunday.

The rescue operation took most of the afternoon to carry out before the sheep was successfully freed.

A fire and rescue spokesman said: “The length of time taken to effect the rescue was not just the safety and welfare of the animal, but of our crews, too.

“Once on scene, the specialist team lowered themselves down to the sheep before securing it with harness equipment and returning back up to safety and level ground.”

The sheep was eventually safely released and was not injured in the incident.
