Do we have pride in our county?

A quiet glory of the English countryside is our road signs. Characteristic of particular counties, Somerset has its classic signs, marked by their pyramid tops carrying the SCC initials.

But we seem to be sadly neglecting them.

I have just photographed examples that are embarrassingly rusty (photo 1), disappearing into the undergrowth (photo 2), and with broken arms where you have to guess that NE is in fact Water Lane (photo 3) .

I organised the West Somerset Railway Classic Car Run and had, myself, to paint Monksilver onto a sign in Stogumber so that participants would know where to go (photo 4).

But is it only the signs on little used byways that are being neglected? Far from it! Just across the road from your office in the very centre of Williton, visitors have to guess that HET 2 takes them the two miles to Watchet (photo 5).

An answer must be forthcoming from the highways department at Somerset County Council. Something must be done.
