A BUILDING in West Somerset, which is currently used as a hub for small businesses, is on the market.
The modern, purpose-built Beckett House on Bridge Street, Williton, is among a range of buildings owned by Somerset Council, which have been deemed “surplus to requirements”.
Back in April of this year councillors in Williton called on MP Rachel Gilmour to raise concerns at a government level over a lack of transparency in the sale of Somerset Council-owned buildings in the village.
The unitary authority’s fraught financial position prompted the proposed sale of Williton’s public library, children’s centre, and Beckett House to avoid bankruptcy. Justifying the sale, the council said it was not deemed in the public interest to retain these buildings.
Beckett House, close to the centre of the village, is currently tenanted and income producing, but Greenslade Taylor Hunt — who are conducting the sale — say it could appeal to a developer.
A spokesperson for Greenslade Taylor Hunt said: “There is no recent planning history associated with the property however we believe it has potential for a range of alternative uses including commercial or residential, subject to planning.”
Currently there are three tenants at the property and the planned sale will include them in situ, however all leases can be ended with a maximum of three months’ notice.
The property comprises four offices, two large training rooms, kitchen, toilets and several storerooms. Outside there are nine parking spaces. In total the property extends to around 0.1 hectares (0.24 acres).
Offers on an unconditional basis at a guide price of £200,000 are invited. The deadline for the submission of offers is noon on Friday, August 8.
