MORE volunteers are needed to help establish a new West Somerset Repair Café which is launching next month.
Newly-established Watchet Climate Group is planning the town’s first repair café on September 27, when the Fixy van will also be attending.
Fixy, Somerset Council’s mobile tech recycling vehicle, attended a recent Watchet street fair and helped to sign up 10 people to support the repair café initiative.
But more are still needed ahead of the launch in Watchet Community Centre on September 27.
The climate group wants to bring together ‘passionate people to do something great in their community’.
One of its first initiatives is to establish a West Quantocks Repair Café which will serve Watchet and Williton and the surrounding villages.
It will be held every two months in Watchet to promote repairing items as an alternative to throwing them away.
Residents can take along their broken items to be fixed on the spot where possible with the help of voluntary repairers.
A spokesperson said: “We are looking for local residents with different skills who can be present as repair experts during the repair café meetings.
“We are especially looking for people who are handy with clothing, textiles, bicycles, electrical appliances, furniture, wooden objects, clocks, watches, jewellery, crafting, and making and mending.
“And who enjoy sharing their knowledge with their neighbours.”
The group also needs people who understand social media and websites who can make the repair cafe ‘more present’ on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, now named X.
The spokesperson said: “In addition, we are also looking for people to fulfil the role of host at the meetings.
“You provide coffee and tea, welcome visitors, and serve as a contact point for both visitors and repairers in the repair café.”
