A WEEKEND of entertainment with a nautical flavour will be floated out across Watchet next weekend. The town's boat museum and Friends of the Flatner organisation are staging an August extravaganza, which will be a mixture of practical skill demonstrations interspersed with music and songs. Coracle builder Ted Pitman will be returning to the town after having shown off his talents at a weekend of entertainment on The Esplanade earlier this year. Meanwhile, rope maker Des Pawson and his wife Liz will be showing how to make decorative and useful ropework and giving visitors the chance to try their hand at the art. Des has been studying knots and ropework since he was seven and has run his own business for the last 25 years, covering all aspects of tying knots. In addition to co-founding the International Guild of Knot Tyers in 1982, he also opened his own museum celebrating the world of knots and rope in 1996. The extravaganza, which will be centred around the boat museum, will also feature two of the South West's leading model boat builders - Julian Palmer and West Somerset-based Tony James, who will be showing some of their completed work and demonstrating that model making is not as easy as it appears. Another highlight will be the appearance of Emmett, a Somerset flatner built in Launcherley near Wells from the Watchet museum's own plans. Emmett's owners Gil and Maureen Mayes will be on hand to answer questions. With the range of attractions running on both days from 11am to 5.30pm. organisers have arranged a wealth of musical entertainment to fill the evening slots, when visitors are advised to bring a folding chair as the museum's seating is limited. From 8pm on Saturday, Neil West and Friends Like These will be performing, with the occasional song and silly story from local talent David Milton, stories from Ted Pitman and a guest appearance by Llama. a lively local two-tone band with strong melodies on guitar, trombone and drums. And on Sunday, Tad Mandziej from Williton, a well known musician within the West Somerset area, will be providing the entertainment with his band. The event, which is being underwritten by ARTlife in partnership with West Somerset District Council, is aimed at providing a weekend of activities and attractions for all ages. Museum spokesman John Nash said: "All the events and attractions are free and we expect a good crowd - we will enjoy ourselves!" Further details on the extravaganza is available from Mr Nash on 01984 633117.
