MINEHEAD'S Girls Brigade celebrated the past and toasted the future when it marked its 60th anniversary.

The special birthday got underway with a reunion evening and fish and chip supper that brought past and present members together to share reminiscences and photos spanning the company's six decades.

The celebratory mood continued at a special service at Minehead Baptist Church - the brigade's base - which provided more opportunities for stories from past members who spoke of the life enhancing impact of the movement.

And the event also provided the platform for the official hand-over of the company's leadership from Sue Bowmer - captain for the past 11 years - to Amy Creech, now the acting team leader.

Tributes were paid to Sue for the huge commitment she had shown to the role.

The anniversary was also marked with a march through the town to another service - this time one of rededication and enrolment - which was attended by members from all sections of the brigade.

A new banner, made to commemorate the anniversary and featuring the names of all current members was also unveiled, while all girls were presented with special anniversary mugs.

The celebrations will be rounded off with an evening of inspiration, entertainment, sweet treats and a complimentary goody bag at Minehead's Regal Theatre on November 29 with a performance of Girls Night Out.

Fronted by Carrie Grant - of The One Show and TV talent contests Pop Idol and Fame Academy - the event will also feature stand-up comedy from award-winning Jo Enright, who has worked with both Peter Kay and Ricky Gervais.

They will speak about their support for the international children's charity World Vision and their visit to Uganda to see the organisation's work in action.

Tickets, costing £5 in advance or £7 on the night, are available from the Regal box office.
