THE music flowed at St Andrew's Church in Minehead this week - and just kept on flowing.

Pianist Phyl Barclay spent almost six hours playing one verse of every hymn in the Ancient and Modern revised hymn book - all 533 of them.

And her efforts, in aid of ongoing repairs at the church, raised more than £500 on the day, with the sponsorship money still coming in.

Keen musician Phyl (pictured at the key) has been a member of the Minehead congregation for the past 24 years, having moved to the town from Wootton Courtenay.

A retired teacher, she spent the last 14 years of her career as deputy head of Dunster First School.

Churchwarden Martyn Snell said the pianothon had started at 10am on the dot on Tuesday and was completed just before 3.30pm.

"Phyl was slightly tired but very pleased with her efforts," he said.

"She did marvellously well. There were people in the church the whole time she was playing, with a maximum number of around 30 at noon.

"Not only was the playing good, so was the singing!"
