SIR — As a frequent visitor to Williton from my home in California, I was shocked to read of the proposed development of 200 houses, industrial premises and a road to the east of that very special village.

I walk these footpaths there and absorb the calming beauty of green fields and hills from my accommodation in the village twice or three times each year, as indeed do so many of your citizens.

I have seen folk greet each other, stop and talk for a while, even welcoming me, a stranger, to join them. Where else would this happen?

When it is realised how very special to Williton that place is, I am sure it will be realised that building should take place in other small areas around the town.
