WEST Somerset area residents came up trumps in the 2011 New Year Honours, with no fewer than three MBEs and one OBE being bestowed on local people.

Long-serving county councillor and Exmoor campaigner John Edwards, of Exford, was made an OBE for services to the community, while Wheddon Cross' Mary Bromiley was awarded an MBE for services to equestrian sport.

MBEs were also awarded to Graham High, of Bicknoller, for voluntary services to the Royal British Legion and to community stalwart Pauline Homeshaw, of Wiveliscombe.

Age UK Somerset's chief executive Libby Lisgo was also made an MBE for services to older people.

Ms Lisgo, who lives in Taunton, has been chief executive of the organisation since 1994 and said she was delighted to receive the award.

"I think awards of this nature reflect the work of many people and Age UK Somerset could not do what it does without the efforts of many other people, staff and volunteers.

"This is an opportunity for me to say thank you to them, too," she said.

Ms Lisgo has also served as a Taunton Deane borough councillors and was deputy chairman of the South West Regional Assembly.
