POLICE have arrested a teenage driver following the death of a passenger, also in his teens, in a car crash in West Somerset on Friday (May 8).
The 17-year-old has been held on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, as well as driving while unfit due to alcohol and drugs.
The fatal crash, involving a white Kia Picanto, happened shortly before 10 pm on Peartwater Road, between Nether Stowey and Spaxton, on the Quantock Hills.
No other vehicle was involved.
Emergency services attended the incident, but a 17-year-old boy in the car sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
An Avon and Somerset Constabulary spokesperson said: “His family have been informed and are being supported by a specially-trained officer.
“Our thoughts are with them at this immensely sad time.”
Three other people were also travelling in the Kia and they were taken to Musgrove Park Hospital, in Taunton to be checked over.
The police spokesperson said the arrested youth had since been released on conditional bail while investigations into the incident continued to take place.
They said: “We would ask any witnesses or motorists with dashcam footage that may assist our inquiries to please contact us on 101 and quote reference number 5226126656 or contact us via our website.”
