DOZENS of West Somerset homes and businesses were without power on Sunday morning (August 2) with no idea when it would be restored.

An electricity cut hit the Tower Hill and Bridge Street area of Williton at about 6.30 am.

National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) initially said a fault had developed on overhead power lines, but a short time later said the outage was due to a problem with an underground power cable.

An NGED spokesperson said: “There is a fault on the low voltage power cables and we are working to fix this.

“Our engineers are working hard to get power back on.

“We are still assessing what repairs are needed, so we do not have a timeframe yet.”

By 12.30 pm, NGED said only 22 properties were still off supply.

It is the second outage to hit the village in just over a month after nearly 80 properties in the Catwell area suffered an overnight power cut in late June on one of the hottest nights of the year.

On that occasion, a low voltage underground cable developed a fault and the site had to be excavated for engineers to replace a section of the line.
