Being unable to hold its usual activities linked to World Book Day did not stop Cutcombe C of E First School marking the occasion with a number of book-related activities.

Children were invited to dress up as a character from a book and send photos in via the online platforms of Tapestry or Google Classroom.

Other activities included writing character descriptions, book reviews and designing book marks. Links with other curriculum subjects were also made as the children found the perimeter of books.

The highlight of the day was a virtual session with families at home and children accessing the provision in school. Staff read extracts from a number of well known books for young readers and the children were asked to name the book.

Cutcombe also received a bundle of new books for the school library thanks to the Morrisons Foundation in partnership with the National Literacy Trust. Teresa Griffths, community champion from the Morrisons store in Minehead, arranged for the books to be delivered to the school.

Teresa said: “I’m so proud to be helping kids in my community through this donation of books. We are living through challenging times and I hope these stories will give children at Cutcombe some fun and enjoyment.”

Cutcombe was one of 497 schools in England, Scotland and Wales to receive the donation. The initiative aims to encourage 125,000 children from local communities to discover a love of reading this world book and over the past three years Morrisons community champions have shared out 20,000 books with schools in their local communities. Staff and children would like to thank Morrisons and the National Literacy Trust for the donation.
