SIR — What an odd world we live in.

One week before Christmas a roe deer doe managed to get herself trapped in the courtyard of Dulverton's fishing and gun shop, whereupon she was rescued by three RSPCA officers and released into nearby woods.

Nearly every regional West Country newspaper carried this heart-warming seasonal story.

Two days after Christmas, at the Boxing Day meet, I watch as about 100 riders and supporters of the Quantock Staghounds career around the Crowcombe Park Gate area in pursuit of red deer hinds, of which I saw two killed.

Not one regional West Country newspaper rated this seasonal story a mention.

Is it me, or do we really live in a schizophrenic world when it come to animal welfare?
