DONATIONS of nearly £22,000 in only eight days have dramatically saved the Exmoor Pony Centre from closure – and given a new future to pony foals which could have been threatened with slaughter this autumn.

The Free Press reported last week that the centre, near Dulverton, could close at the end of the summer without a £20,000 emergency injection of cash.

And since that report, donations have flooded in, giving the charity time to increase its fund-raising efforts.

More than 750 well-wishers have donated money through a crowdfunding scheme and the centre is now aiming for a new target of £30,000 before the appeal ends on June 2.

“We can’’t thank our supporters enough,” centre manager Linzi Green said on Wednesday.

“The response has been truly overwhelming.

“It’s a great weight off our minds to know that we can now keep the centre running for the rest of the year and begin to implement the next stage of our rescue plan.”
