STAFF from Taunton Deane Borough Council could share office space with West Somerset Council workers in Williton under radical proposals designed to save the Taunton-based authority money. Although the two councils have a joint management team and are in the process of sharing service delivery, they have their own democratic committees, budgets and headquarters in Williton and Taunton. But, according to opposition Taunton Deane councillor Jefferson Horsley, as many as 115 Taunton staff could be moved to Williton if the Deane council presses ahead with plans to sell off its current HQ. Writing on his official Twitter account, Cllr Horsley said: "Corporate scrutiny at TDBC rejected by seven votes to five to transfer 115 jobs to Williton and to sell Deane House. "We want inward investment in Taunton and economic growth - not a transfer of jobs away from the town." Taunton Deane's corporate scrutiny committee had been meeting to discuss a confidential report on the possibility of selling the current offices at Deane House and sharing office space with Somerset County Council at County Hall. A Deane council spokesman said the paper did not contain any specific proposals about transferring staff from Taunton Deane to West Somerset. But she said Taunton Deane staff could well make more use of West Somerset House, West Somerset Council's HQ in Williton, in the future. In a statement she said: "Reference was made in the confidential report to Taunton Deane Borough Council's corporate scrutiny committee to ideas considering the future use of West Somerset House in Williton as part of the wider joint management and shared services accommodation strategy. "The non-confidential section of the report makes it clear that there is the potential for increased use of West Somerset House in the future. "This would be subject, among other things, to member approval by West Somerset Council and to a payment from Taunton Deane to ensure there is no cross subsidy between the two authorities."
