AROUND 130 bottles and cans, five supermarket trolleys and a myriad of other rubbish were all cleaned out of a drainage ditch in Minehead during the week.

West Somerset District Council member for Alcombe East, Nick Messarra, initiated the clean-up after receiving complaints from members of the public.

"Lots of my ward members were complaining about the smell from the rubbish so it was vital something was done," Cllr Messarra said.

Council workers soon got to work clearing the rhyne, which runs between Minehead Enterprise Park and Minehead Sawmill in Mart Road.

Cllr Messarra said: "The exercise proved to be very useful and will hopefully help to encourage wildlife into the area and help prevent flooding during the winter."
