YOUNG musicians hit the high notes for a contest that tested their talents across the musical spectrum.
Classical, jazz and modern music pieces were played out for the first Young Musician of the Year competition staged by the Rotary Club of Minehead.
Instruments ranging from guitar and flute to trumpet and violin were put through their paces at the event, which was held at the West Somerset Community College.
Competitors were split into two categories - intermediate (11 - 13 years) and senior (14 -17).
Trumpeter Joseph Lintern from Minehead Middle School took the intermediate trophy, with West Somerset Community College pupil John Knight on piano winning the senior section.
However, violinist Sian Ellen Hawker, a Richard Huish College student, was a close runner-up.
Head judge David Yates said it had been very difficult to pick a winner.
"This was the first time the event had been held and, now established, I am sure it will go from strength to strength," said Mr Yates.
"It was a lovely evening of music."
Club president Barrie Harban added his praise for the event's success: "What a wonderful evening of music," he said.
"Minehead certainly has a wealth of musical talent in its young people."
