HE shrouded figures installation created by West Somerset artist Rob Heard has been shortlisted for a Remember World War One award.
Rob’s installation to commemorate all 19,240 Allied soldiers who fell on the first day of the Battle of the Somme was hugely successful when displayed earlier this year in Exeter.
Exhibition organisers received hundreds of requests to extend it – and now they are bringing the display to the grounds of Bristol Cathedral, to be on show from November 11 to 18, marking the centenary of the battle and remembering all 127,751 British casualties of the Somme.
Rob, of Bardon, near Washford, wrapped and bound each figure in a hand-stitched shroud, crossing the name of every soldier who fell on that first day off a list from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
Mel Bradley, the Shrouds of the Somme project manager said: “The Shrouds, along with the Poppies at the Tower, are perhaps the most memorable World War One commemorations this country has ever seen."
