THE Somerset Churches Trust, which supports Christian buildings across the county, is holding its annual fund-raising event as usual this month – but with a twist.
Traditionally the event – Ride+Stride – invites supporters to get people to sponsor their walk, cycle ride or any other means of transport between a group of churches.
Ride+Stride Day is on Saturday (September 12) but if people would like to take part on other days between tomorrow and September 20 the charity will be delighted for their support.
Since the organisation was founded in 1996 the event has raised more than £466,000 to fund the grants the charity offers to all Christian churches, chapels and meeting houses in the historic county of Somerset.

The money is used to help churches with projects that aim to open up their buildings for more community use as well as necessary repairs.
But this year with the problems of the pandemic and social distancing the charity is suggesting that some people might prefer to give a donation to the organisation – without taking part on the day,
Anyone who would still like to visit a group of local churches and raise money is welcome to do so, although some churches may not be open.
Ride+Stride organiser and trustee Philip Skelhorn said: “For many in the rural parishes the traditional format may not be as attractive as it once was and, as a result, an alternative and less demanding way of supporting the trust by simply making a donation is offered to the churches of the diocese.”
To make a donation or create a fundraising page visit the Somerset Churches Trust website and click on ’donate’ to be directed to Virgin Money Giving. Sponsorship forms can also be downloaded from the website.
If people wish, 50 per cent of the sponsorship obtained will be returned to the church or other registered charity of their choosing.
The Newsom Trophy will be awarded to the parish which raises the most money plus £250 towards their church funds. The individual who raises the most money will also be presented with a trophy and be awarded a further £250 for their chosen church or charity.
Mr Skelhorn added: “With the public’s help we believe that we can reach our £500,000 target.”
