Elderly residents of Lockwood Court, off Stiby Road in Yeovil, are to celebrate The Queen's Golden Jubilee in style.

Lockwood Court Support Group budgeted a cost of £500 towards the project, and asked Yeovil Town Council for half of that.

The actual celebrations will come in the shape of a street party, and it is also hoped to give each resident a commemorative jubilee mug.

Councillor Pat Martin supported the application as such but was afraid a positive response from the council would open the floodgates when reported in the press.

Many councillors seemed to agree but Councillor Tony Fife pointed out that there aren't many such establishments in the town.

He also said that the residents of Lockwood Court were elderly and unable to raise their own funds, adding it is the council's role to help the frail and elderly.

"These people have made their contributions to society throughout their lives," Mr Fife said.

A short debate followed before councillors voted 10-0 to give the £250 applied for.
