SIR — In response to your report "Flag at half mast" (Free Press April 19) following the Minehead Town Council meeting on Tuesday April 16, the Mayor of Minehead Town Council Cllr Tony Berry introduced an item of flying the Union Jack at half mast in line with protocol in respect of the death of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
He said: "Do all councillors agree?" and in response I said I did not agree and attempted to explain why.
The mayor then declared there would not be any debate, moved to a vote and I was the only objector.
I believe his response was contrary to the town council's standing orders and his action undermined the principle of freedom of speech within the council chamber.

This is untrue as I am an Independent councillor on Minehead Town Council and not a member of the party mentioned.
At a time when there is canvassing taking place for the county council elections, I feel it was inappropriate to introduce a party political aspect to the report.
My reason briefly for not flying the flag at half mast is that I do not believe such an action should be taken in recognition of a politician unless the politician has achieved something exceptional outside of the political arena.
Simplistic it may appear but I have many reasons for this statement.
Cllr Ron Bridle,
Minehead Town Council.
