AN historic cairn on the Quantock Hills has been damaged by vandals or metal detectorists twice in a matter of days.
The 4,000-year-old Bronze Age burial mound above Crowcombe is one of more than 50 scheduled monuments in the pre-historic landscape of the Quantocks.
The almost-five feet high stone mound, which is about 82 feet in diameter, had its rocks removed to reveal the burial chamber beneath.
A Quantock Hills National Landscape (QHNL) spokesperson said: “Damage to a scheduled monument is a criminal offence.
“At these sites, it is illegal to move rocks, stones, or soil, to dig into or to cause any damage.
“It is also illegal to use metal detectors.
“Information and evidence has been sent to Historic England.”
QHNL now faces the cost of repairs.
