SIR — Reading your front page report on a possible puma attack (Free Press March 19), I wonder if this could be linked?
This photograph of footprints in the snow was taken in Stogumber last February.
I have been unable to identify the creature but the closest match that I can come up with is a small bear; all the prints seem to be rear paws.
I measured the prints as about 350mm (14 inches) apart.
Also in the news
We get lots of badgers and the like but these prints don't match and the badger would have to be about four feet long without the tail.
It would be interesting to find out if any of your readers can identify what it was.
Paul Haines,
Stogumber.
