TOWN councillors in Watchet last week agreed to raise their bill for ratepayers next year by almost a quarter.

A 22.8 per cent hike in the council's precept will see its budget go up by £13,000 to £70,000.

Cllr John Richards said the extra money would allow the authority to carry out a number of major projects in the town.

He said £10,000 would now be available for the repair and maintenance of new children's play equipment.

Another £10,000 would cover the cost of building a new bike and skateboard area in the Henry Davies Field.

A £3,000 contribution could be made towards projects supported by the town's new regeneration officer, £2,000 was allocated to a millennium project to improve the gateways to the town, and £2,000 would be set aside for a specific project once a new youth club was opened.

Cllr Richards said the authority also faced heavy on-going annual costs with £4,800 for maintenance of the St Decuman's burial ground, resurfacing a footpath to the church and £6,000 for street light maintenance.
