SUPPORTERS of Watchet's war memorial campaign enjoyed a 'Spring Fling' over the bank holiday weekend and boosted their cause by just over £1,121.

The Watchet Remembrance Project Group event at the Cherry Tree Way Green included a street fair, hog roast and a range of attractions.

And it provided the perfect opportunity for local youngster Joshua Crockford to present project leaders with a £100 cheque - the amount he raised in sponsorship for taking part in the recent Danesfield Fun Run.

In return, the Danesfield Middle School pupil was presented with a certificate of appreciation for his efforts.

More than £15,000 has been raised towards the project to site a new memorial next to Watchet's library on The Esplanade.

It will commemorate the 56 local men who lost their lives in World War One and Two and, it is hoped, will be in situ in time for the 100th anniversary of the start of World War One in June next year.

Project trustee Sara Summers said the group was very grateful to Joshua for his fundraising efforts.

"Let us hope he is the first of many Watchet youngsters to help us attain our goal to see the new war memorial built," she said.

Mrs Summers said the group also wanted to thank Jerry Cridge and the residents of Cherry Tree Way for the use of the green and their support for the Spring Fling.

The group's next event is a cream tea on the Gay Archer boat in Watchet Marina on Sunday (June 2) from 10am to 4pm to mark the 60th anniversary of the Queen's coronation.

In addition, there will be a Churches Together event on The Esplanade at 3pm.
