SIR — We are rightly proud of the success of our Rio Olympians and the welcome home they received.
2012 London’s success was to have created a legacy which would bring ordinary young people into the world of competitive sport and introduce them to a healthy lifestyle full of the enjoyment of sport at all levels.
We now read that £250 million of lottery money was diverted to these elite sportspeople who are now able to train full-time.
Meanwhile, we ordinary folk lost Aquasplash alongside the closure of hundreds of other swimming and leisure facilities across the UK. I swam a mile early every weekday morning at Aquasplash while my wife used the gym.
At 82 and 80 respectively, we were not likely to be entered for the Olympics but we did manage to keep ourselves fit and healthy and, therefore, less of a burden on the NHS.
I think some joined-up thinking from the Government would not go amiss.
