SIR — The Jubilee Clock Tower Committee would like to thank everyone who has supported it by donating money or attending its extensive range of events, culminating in a superb talk by Hilary Binding, on the Royal Forest of Exmoor.

One of the most encouraging things is the number of young people who are enthusiastic about this project. They and future generations are the ones who are going to benefit most from this new landmark so it is vital that we listen to them and take them with us.

We are always open to any fund-raising suggestions from all sections of the community. Alternatively you can organise an event yourself to raise funds. All the money raised so far has come from private sources and fund raising. We have not been in receipt of any money that would otherwise have gone to things such as public toilets, road sweeping, or any other council services.

We are delighted that so many U3A members were able to meet the Clock Tower architect Peter Ferguson at their recent Marine Day, when he showed again the slides he had originally shown to the Minehead Conservation Society in September 2011. Peter, who was born in Minehead is a conservation architect as well as being a marine historian, so who could be better qualified to produce a stunning design at an affordable price.

It is disappointing that we have been unable to get the tower up in the Jubilee year but we are resolved to do our best to get it up before the next tourist season so that Minehead has a new, functional and exciting seafront feature to attract people to the town. Help us to get this project, which now has charitable status, finished and bring back pride in Minehead. Maybe one of the royal family will unveil it for us! Prince Charles has expressed an interest in the project.

There have been some adverse comments in the paper recently about Minehead and its tourism offer. We should like to point out that we are a group that has been striving very hard during the Jubilee year to raise the money, not only to honour the Queen but to enhance the town through the creation of a new attraction.

There is an opportunity available to everyone, to support this local charity, by having the name of a loved one, child or grandchild inscribed on the tower as a Christmas present. Visit the website http://www.mineheadclocktower.org.uk">www.mineheadclocktower.org.uk to find out how to donate or pick up a leaflet at the library or WSR.

We look forward very much to seeing our loyal supporters and others at our events in the New Year. A very happy Christmas to you all.

S Bainbridge,

Jubilee Clock Tower Committee,

Minehead.
