The Rev Ann Gibbs and Denise Sage have joined forces in this new Dementia Action Alliance project which was launched with a ‘tea and homemade crumpet’ event in Porlock Village Hall.
Margaret Tatham, of Watchet Dementia Action Alliance, a Dementia Champion and the inspiration behind the initiative, attended the tea and addressed a full hall.
She spoke of the formation of a group of Dementia Friends and the process of forming a Dementia Action Alliance.
The crumpets were supplied by Mrs Jackson’s Tea Room in Porlock, and Miles Tea kindly donated the tea.
The event was free, but donations were collected for Admiral Nurses and Dementia UK, amounting to £221.
The first wave of Dementia Friends met on Monday to learn about their new role. Businesses and organisations will soon be approached to become members, and it is hoped to organise a regular dementia friendly coffee morning, and other activities.
Porlock has the greatest density of elderly people in in the country, so it is anticipated that dementia will become more common in the future. The idea of forming the Alliance is to put a positive attitude on dementia, enabling people affected by, it to live well in their community.
