A BUMPER 23 entries, aided by fine weather and large crowds of supporters, helped to make the 21st Porlock Carnival a success. Once again the top honours went to Porlock Bowling Club for their take on a cult children's hero with their entry Harry Potter and the Bewildered Bowlers. Familiar faces from Porlock Visitor Centre triumphed in the adult float section with a reconstruction of a Day Trip to the Normandy Beaches, while the Passmore Family took first place in the junior mobile float section with the Wizard of Oz. Other stars from stage and film came to life with entries including Star Wars, Cinderella and a wicked Cruella de Ville from 101 Dalmatians. A bevy of beauties from Porlock's Royal Oak were also on hand to come to the rescue of those in need with a modest portrayal of TV's popular beach drama Bay Watch. The procession was led by this year's carnival queen Bethany Hobbs ably attended by princesses Campbell Bradly and Grace Bentham. As well as an array of floats and walking entries, the carnival also featured Porlock Fire Brigade, local coastguards, Wellington Majorettes and the Minehead Dance Club. Jacky Pietrusiewicz of the carnival committee said organisers were delighted with Saturday's big parade: "We were very pleased with the amount of people who turned out to support the carnival - it really was one of the best of recent years. "Everyone had an excellent time, the weather was good and there were some really imaginative entries. "For our 21st carnival we really came of age." She thanked competitors, supporters, onlookers and collectors for helping make the annual event such a success. The parade was followed by a prize-giving, barbecue and disco in the village hall.
