YOUNG drivers are being offered the chance to have their hot hatches checked out by experts as part of a two-week police amnesty aimed at driving up vehicle standards. Often dubbed "boy racers" due to their passion for modifying their cars with oversized spoilers, neon lights, alloy wheels and large exhausts, the young drivers are being encouraged to give their cars the once over. Minehead police will be offering free car health checks at the raised car park near Butlins from 6pm to 9pm on Monday. Owners will then have a two-week amnesty to get any minor faults and defects fixed. The move has been prompted by complaints about the age and condition of many of the "souped-up" vehicles currently being favoured by West Somerset youngsters. Minehead PC Charlie Fitzpatrick said: "We will be offering advice on lighting, tyres and modifications such as spoilers. "We want to make sure the owners are not breaking the law and we will give them two weeks to put any offence right before we prosecute." He said drivers interested in setting up a specialised car club in the town should also go along to Monday's event. "There was talk of starting a club a few years ago, which would have seen mechanical experts being brought in, but nothing ever happened. "However, we've had a couple of phone calls about the idea in recent weeks from young people keen to know how to look after their cars so we're hoping we might be able to get something off the ground in the near future," PC Fitzpatrick said.
