LUXBOROUGH'S new children's play area has been opened by parish council chairman June Henson as part of the Queen's Jubilee celebrations.

The number of children living in the village has grown sharply in recent years and the nearest playground used to be four miles away. Luxborough people have been fund-raising for some time to build the play area and the scheme became possible when the £2,500 raised locally was topped up by a £4,500 National Lottery grant form the Awards for All scheme and a £1,000 donation from Lloyds TSB Foundation.

Opening the play area, Mrs Henson said: "I am sure this new playground will be well used both by Luxborough children and by our many visitors.

"Alongside our fine new village hall, it demonstrates what a small village can do when people work together."
