PLAY areas across Somerset have now re-opened – but there are rules for those who want to use them.

Councils have been gradually reopening facilities in the last few weeks, as central government has relaxed the restrictions on citizens’ movements and how many people can socialise together in one place.

With all play areas across Somerset now open again, the local authorities have set out the rules residents need to obey to prevent any kind of second wave from shutting things back down.

Somerset West and Taunton Council (SWAT) has published a list of guidelines on its website, which have been replicated by the other three district councils – Mendip, Sedgemoor and South Somerset.

The rules are:

* Anyone using playgrounds should practise social distancing;

* Wash your hands before and after use;

* Only one adult per household should accompany children inside the play area;

* If the play area is too crowded, form a queue or come back later;

* During busy periods, people will be limited to 30 minutes in the play area to ensure everyone gets a go;

* Anyone using outdoor gym equipment should bring a towel and hygiene products to wipe it down after use;

* Dispose of any litter in the bins provided, or take it home.

Notices laying out these rules should already be on display outside play areas, and must not be removed. By Daniel Mumby
