A DECISION on Williton businessman David Gliddon’s controversial plan to build retail units behind Fore Street is due to be made by West Somerset Council’s planning committee on Thursday (January 26).
The committee was set to rule on the fate of the development on December 1 but had to defer making a decision due to an “administrative oversight” which meant that interested parties had not been told of the application.
Previously, the committee had refused Mr Gliddon’s application for retail units and a walkway through to Fore Street against planning officers’ advice.
It also rejected a related application to build a £7 million supermarket on an adjoining site, and in July last year Mr Gliddon lodged appeals against both decisions, saying they “flew in the face” of the advice of planning offices.
The plan before Thursday’s meeting no longer involves a mini-roundabout or demolishing part of Mr Gliddon’s Bank Street store, but does involve a walkway which would reduce the size of the village’s Lloyds bank.
The committee is being recommended by planning officers to approve it.

The meeting in the Williton council chamber starts at 4.30pm.
