TWO sisters are applying for permission to change former hunt kennels into a residential dwelling.
The three-bedroom detached bungalow in Stogursey was used by the West Somerset Vale Hunt hunt for decades until May 2025.
Briony Dodgson and Leonie Dodgson, said: “They ran their business from the kennels. We were simply their landlords. We did not get involved with their business in any way.
“They have been deliberating what to do for what seems like months now but on May 1 2025 they made the decision to leave the property.”
The building comprises of several kennels with outdoor runs, a tack room, kitchen, garage storeroom and WC.
The property is a mile outside of Stogursey and just over three miles from Stolford Beach.
Briony and Leonie are applying to Somerset Council to change the use of The Kennels from business to domestic so they can sell the property to a buyer.
The property set within 1.7 acres of countryside is currently uninhabited.
On their application form to Somerset Council, Briony said: “My sister and I weren’t all sure what to do with the property at first. We took on board some advice and after some consideration, we opted to put the property on the market, not knowing who it would appeal to.
“Almost immediately, a buyer came forward. She has since confirmed that she will be using it as a residence and has requested us to change the use from business to residential, a process we hadn’t even realised that we might have to do.”
Briony went on to explain that they received two council tax/business rate invoices for the property for the same time period.
“At first I was just confused with invoices for different amounts, until finally getting confirmation from Somerset Council that one invoice was, in fact, for business rates and the other for domestic council tax.”
“How one property can generate both types of charge, I still have no idea. Since that revelation, I have been trying to get the business rates invoice cancelled.”
Briony also pointed out that the property will need a lot of repair work.
The West Somerset Vale Hunt took all of their belongings with them, leaving the entire property empty and unfurnished.
The bungalow comprises of an entrance hall, sitting room, kitchen, utility room, three bedrooms and a bathroom.
