MAGNA West Somerset Housing Association is warning parents of the dangers children risk by playing near building work in Carhampton.

Letters have been sent to residents of Hillview Road following reports of children climbing the site office roof or breaking through fencing designed to keep people out for fear of accidents.

Magna technical services manager Ian Hancock said: "We take health and safety very seriously and put in place all the required measures to avoid the risk of accidents.

"Thankfully, to date there have been no injuries, although some minor damage has been caused which is being dealt with.

"Any building site area is potentially hazardous, but some of these youngsters seem unaware that in playing close to such materials they could be putting themselves or others at risk.

"This could be an accident waiting to happen, so we're asking parents to be vigilant and are appealing to youngsters to use some common sense and play elsewhere."

Magna contractors have been working on the PRC homes at Hillview Road for some months. Most of them have been demolished and rebuilt, rather than refurbished, to bring them up to a higher standard.

Current work involves three or four of the homes, all nearing completion, with a further phased pencilled in for 2002.

The districtwide programme is due for completion in 2002-03 - five years ahead of schedule.
