A musical theatre workshop with Fusion Young Performers is being held across five days for young people aged 13 to 26 in Alcombe next month.
Participants in ‘Musical Theatre Skills Development: From Page to Stage’ will develop and rehearse an abridged version of Sam Baker and Sophy Layzell’s new musical, Havisham: The Greatest Expectation.
They will be working with Helena Payne, the creative director of Pleasure Dome Theatre Company, as well the composer and scriptwriter. Helena brings professional productions to the South-West and is always on the look-out for new, fresh talent.
The musical tells the story of the hopes and dreams of Amelia Havisham, who is better known in Charles Dickens’ novel Great Expectations as the bitter and twisted spinster who causes Pip such heartache and disappointment. But who was she before she was left jilted at the altar? Why didn’t she listen to her best friend?
As the group works towards an abridged performance of the show at the end of the week it will have the opportunity to be involved in ensemble work, singing and dancing, as well as exploring and helping develop parts of the text.
The workshops, part-funded by Take Art, run from Monday to Friday, August 23 to 27, from 10am to 4pm daily but 11.30am to 4pm on Thursday, at St Michael’s Church, Alcombe.
The cost is £60 for five days.
