SIR — The summer holidays are fast approaching here in sunny Minehead, with lots of people coming down spending lots of money in the shops and filling the guest houses. But why can't they, those who wish to, come all the way down here by train? It would relieve pressure on the roads and parking and, most importantly, decrease pollution considerably. If we are able successfully to convince the Iranian government not to develop their own nuclear weapon then, surely, we can open the last little piece of track between Bishops Lydeard and Taunton? Just imagine what unparalleled joy it would bring to the army of railway enthusiasts and tourists, not to mention the extra revenue and spin-offs all down the line. I was chatting to a West Somerset Railway employee on the train recently and was informed that there is no mechanical reason why this stretch of track may not be used for carrying passenger trains. Indeed, it apparently is regularly used for shunting empty rolling stock to and fro between Bishops Lydeard and Taunton. One is tempted to wonder if there is a presence of bureaucrats involved here who continuously reject the idea as a mark of their importance. Perhaps there is an ancient and very dusty ledger mouldering on a shelf somewhere in which is decreed that this is not allowed to happen. Or, God help us, it is entangled in some way with the European Union. If this logical and much needed step was taken it would be the icing on the cake and something to celebrate and be proud of. So come on relevant people – pull your collective fingers out and give us what we have been waiting too long for. If it is a bureaucratic blockage then it is regrettable, although they are universally renowned for what they can't do. Why can't it go ahead on a trial basis or as a limited service?
