KNITTING and crochet beginners and enthusiasts are being invited to a free workshop at That Little Craft Shop on Saturday (August 19) to create octopuses for the premature baby unit at Musgrove Park Hospital.

Research has shown that, when cuddling soft toy octopus tentacles, babies

have better breathing, more regular heartbeats, higher levels of oxygen in their blood, and are less likely to try to pull out their monitors and tubes.

Clare Richards, who runs the Friday Street shop with assistant Samantha Hewlett, said: "The idea originated in Denmark, where specialists discovered that the octopus tentacles, which are crocheted in a spiral, resemble the umbilical cord. It helps make babies feel safe because it’s what they are used to in the womb."

The workshops are from 10am to noon and 1pm to 3pm. Spaces are limited so booking is required; phone 01643 818070.
