WATCHET resident David Milton is preparing to find his voice - but all in the name of ensuring the future of an historic tradition.

The 53-year-old printer, who until earlier this year worked for the now collapsed Flexible Packaging Solutions in Williton, is already well known in his home town as a stone sculptor, football referee, cricket coach and Punch and Judy entertainer.

But his public profile is set to rise even higher as he takes over as Watchet's new town crier.

Alec Danby, who held the title for 25 years, stepped down from the role this week and although David admits he will not be able to devote as much time to the job as his predecessor, he will certainly do justice to a role that has its roots steeped in history.

"The old title was a bellman, rather than a town crier," said David.

"Alec will be a hard act to follow and I think I may not be quite as 'Beau Brummell' as him - I won't be having quite so much lace on my costume.

Luckily for David, Alec's outfit - which was paid for by a public appeal just over a year ago - fits reasonably well.

A few alterations to the coat and a new pair of trousers - being made by one of David's neighbours - should see him set for his first official appearance at Watchet's Trafalgar Day celebrations on October 21.

"I'm looking forward to the challenge with a mixture of apprehension and enthusiasm," he said.

"I'm aiming to be a down to earth town crier and I think the secret will be to try not to shout too loud.

"I'm hoping to have some fun but there will be serious times as well, such as Remembrance Day.

"It will be another hat for me to wear because I do have a lot of other commitments and hobbies that I want to continue to pursue.

"I thought long and hard before accepting the position but several people encouraged me to do it, including Alec.

"It's a tradition that has to continue and I shall certainly give it my best."
