A FIRE in an office block on the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station construction site on Friday (January 2) was caused by an air conditioning unit.

Smoke was seen issuing from the building just after 3.30 am and Nether Stowey fire crews were mobilised to the incident.

Hinkley’s on-site fire and rescue team were in attendance and had put out the blaze.

The Nether Stowey firefighters used breathing apparatus to help to check the building for any further signs of fire and then ventilated it using positive pressure fans.

A Hinkley spokesperson said: “A small fire in an air conditioning unit in a canteen was extinguished safely and quickly by our own response team.

“There is no impact on any construction activities.”
