A CHRISTMAS event that nearly did not happen has been such a success organisers will start planning the next one in the new year.
The Minehead Community Christmas Extravaganza and Late Night Shopping event came about when members of the community rallied together after people were disappointed to hear no late night shopping was taking place this year.
Local residents joined forces with community organisation Revive Minehead and town businesses to stage the special event for the first time – and it was a huge success.
With everything from reindeer to meerkats, carols and a band to a grand parade and special cars, plus plenty of late night shopping at stalls and in town shops, there was something for all ages to enjoy.
“It was really well supported,” said Fay Dyke of Revive Minehead.
“We were surprised how many people there were. We’re definitely on for next year and will start planning in the new year.”
Businesses got stuck in, too, with the majority of shops opening and offering festive refreshments, while others took part or helped out in other ways.
Fay Dyke thanked Beaver Ford for their generous financial support in helping make the event possible, and funds were also raised through crowdfunding and collection tins in stores.
Activities took place all over the town, including a Grand Parade headed up by Santa on his sleigh provided by Minehead and District Lions Club, and helped by Minehead PC Mark Curran – with a specially lit helmet.
Oasis Theatre were in fancy dress and did a dance, and scores of members of the public joined in the parade.
Two real reindeer and snow from a snow machine were a big draw outside Santa’s grotto, while a funfair on the Old Hospital forecourt proved highly popular.
The Watchet Town Band, as well as the Urban Voice choir, a shanty crew and carol singers, all added to the Christmas atmosphere.
A Meet the Meerkats enclosure at an indoor Christmas market at the Beach Hotel was highly popular with children, also the circus skills tasters run by Minehead Eye.
A rally car brought along by Chris Hickman was much appreciated, as were as the classic car and motorbike of Minehead Motor Club, and goodies provided by the Farmers’ Market which stayed on for the late night event.
