SIR — Whilst tending the remains of a bonfire at twilight on Sunday, I noticed a white van park at the gate across the field from us and the driver got out and proceeded to dump five bantam cockerels into the field then drive off.

Having had a couple of fox-free years, I will now have to try and catch these birds before Mr Fox gets a taste for chicken again and we lose our chickens. My son managed to catch one white cockerel but the rest headed for the hedge.

As for the idiot that let them go, come on, we all end up with surplus cockerels at the end of the breeding season and they are hard to re-home - grow a spine and dispatch them properly instead of causing a problem for someone else.

Better still, give up keeping chickens if you can't do it responsibly. I wouldn't trust you with a goldfish!
