SIR — Your readers will have been greatly relieved to learn that convicted paedophile John Adams is no longer free to prey upon children and young people (Free Press June 16) and now faces many years in prison.

However, the NSPCC would like to correct one error which appeared in newspaper reports during and after his trial.

Despite claims to have been the charity's top fund raiser in the West Country, John Adams was nothing of the sort.

While it is true that he allowed members of the local NSPCC committee to use a field he owned as a venue for car boot sales, he had no personal link to the charity.

When we were advised by local police in 1992 that Adams was under investigation, we made sure that no further sales were held on his land and that he should not claim any further connection with the NSPCC.

At no time did John Adams have any contact, direct or indirect, with vulnerable children with whom the NSPCC was working. Indeed, we follow rigorous safeguarding procedures to ensure that any of our staff or volunteers who work with children have been thoroughly vetted and to deter child abusers from attempting to join the NSPCC.

The people of West Somerset have always been generous in their support of the NSPCC and I do hope that they will find this information reassuring.

Eileen Shearer,

NSPCC Regional Director.
